Travertine is named for its many holes on the surface of stone. Its scientific name is tuff or travertine. Commercially, it is classified as marble.

The color of the travertine is mostly beige, which makes people feel gentle, rich in texture and clear in stripes. The decorative buildings often have strong cultural and historical charm and are used by many buildings in the world. Its formation is generally considered to be a calcium material precipitated from carbonated spring water (usually a hot spring) under atmospheric conditions. The specific formation is that the circulating groundwater containing oxidized carbon carries a large amount of calcium carbonate in the solution of the plant. When the groundwater reaches the surface of the spring, some carbon dioxide is released and condensed in the sedimentary layer of the calcium carbonate to form A rare bubble (hole), which has a travertine.

The difference between limestone and travertine in the ocean is that the tuff is mostly deposited in rivers or lakes and ponds. This rapid deposition prevents the release of organic matter and gas, resulting in beautiful texture, but it is disadvantageous. It also creates a layering of internal cracks that weakens its strength in line with the grain direction. Because there are holes in the tuff, its unit density is not large, it is suitable for covering materials, and it is not suitable for the structural materials and basic materials of the building. In the past, human clay used a lot of travertine as the basic material and structural material of the building, but with concrete, it is not used much now.
